Building as a freelance.

11th November, 2009 by Kyle Mac

Ive just finsihed my studies and am really pushing for freelance work.

I have been emailing several of my favorite designers, to try source some advice!

A couple refered me to jackywinter.com to submit work and see where it could possibly lead!

Does anybody have any other similar sites like jacky winter that could pave the path into picking up freelance jobs?

Any reccommended agencies to approach?

Thanks!

Kyle.

Hi Kyle, if you haven't already done one, a good place to start might be to create a studio profile on the AGDA site - I hear lots of stories about designers getting work through this avenue. Good luck!

The small studio I work for started with my boss just freelancing. She found lots of clients (most of our current clients actually) by doing a business class. While learning about how to run her business, she had access to all her classmates on a much more personal level than she could have found any other way. When the class was about branding and marketing, she put her hand up saying she can do all that for people, and the rest is history. She did her class at the National College of Business, and this particular course was only for business owners.

Good luck,

Keegan

Firstly, nice work by the way!

One comment I would say on your folio is get rid of the words uni brief and just say it's a project. They stand well on their own.

The way I seem to get more work is just through going the extra mile for my existing customers. Always go beyond the brief. They seem to find me more work than just about any concerted effort that I've made to find new clients. Treat your clients like gold and they'll look after you.

Also if you know other designers in slightly different disciplines (web, retail, packaging), find way to give them jobs you can't handle, and they'll likely as not repay the favour.

Hi Kyle,

I agree, your work is fantastic, especially for someone who has only just finished studies! I'm currently working full-time as a freelance designer and the bulk of my work has come from referrals ASK ASK ASK!

Also, I have received a lot of work from a web design firm and photographer who I built a referral partnership with, they love when I give them work and vice versa.

Good luck Im sure you'll have no trouble at all, your very talented.
