AGDAs voice on Specs

Hi

I was wondering how members think about the growing client acceptance of spec pages.

I am in contact with a lot of SME, e.g. on flyingsolo.com.au and I more and more hear things like "go to 99design.com - you get great work for little money" or the likes.

I'm a bit tired of educating or even just discussing the topic and the advantages of working with a pro. And why we can't produce logos or websites for less than $200 or $500.

Is it just a waste of time and should we look for the other clients who know that they have to pay for quality or do you think we have to keep going and educating?

I noticed that the clients who know about what they want come here and look for designers (got a few contracts out of AGDA this year, which is great) - but what about all the other who just don't see it?

BTW: I came across this page today

Curious about your opinion,

Astrid

A site like 99 designs will always attract a certain client - one who values price over the result. I have had clients us 99designs for a logo, then come to me for stationery design. Not only did I have to work with a logo that was, in a word, 'uninspired', but oddly enough the flat 2-colour logo was was supplied in Illustrator as part-vector, part embedded .gif (which, call my cynical, made me suspicious of the origin of that symbol).

Another client who used 99designs was caught short when his designer, located in the US, went to jail for fraud (in another industry), and was supplied with next to nothing to pass onto another designer to finish the job.
